BIG IN JAPAN

Japan has one of the most flourishing VJ and multimedia scenes in the world and Tokyo is often seen by many in Europe and the US as some kind of ‘VJ heaven’.  The home of anime, manga and all kinds of kitsch pop has a long and rich tradition in the visual arts and VJing has moved more into the mainstream in Japan than perhaps anywhere else.  With a visual culture that loves technology, the conditions are right for the scene to thrive.

Cinefeel has been curating a number a cinema programmes featuring music videos, animations and AV work for both the Optronica festival in London and for the multimedia venue Le Cube in Paris.

Japanese artists featured included animators and designers Devil Robots, Power Graphixx, Hideaki Motoki, +Cruz, Enlightenment and Imai Toonz, as well as VJs Glamoove, TomoGrapher, Ukawa Naohiro, Kloma, SanFrandisco, Gooddy and UNU, plus AV artists Delaware, Masakatsu Takagi and Ryoichi Kurukawa, and many more.

In addition, Cinefeel brought the ‘Goback2D’ exhibition to Paris at Project101 in 2003.  ‘Goback2D’ is a project from Takako Narita, gathering eight Japanese and English illustrators, all passionate about graphic art and cartoons. This ‘Tenugui’ themed exhibition featured Japanese artists Tak, Baku from Sapporo, Symbolon and Imai Toonz, and British artists Pete FowlerLucy/Beat13, Matt Swell and Chris Drury.  With launch party entertainment from DJs Breakfastisback and VJs SanFrandisco.
